This year, for the first time, my family has an actual vegetable garden. My siblings and Bella (my dad’s mom) put in a lot of hard work in April and May to establish the garden. I then took over caring for the garden in late May. At first it was rather tedious, watering and weeding every day, and not exactly enjoyable, but as the summer has progressed I am loving watching everything grow (and harvesting is so much fun!). It is honestly unbelievable how quickly everything grows and ripens! God’s creation is truly incredible.
All that to say, I took some pictures in the garden a week or so ago and wanted to share them with you. So let’s get started. 🙂
Winter Squash (of an unknown variety)
Do you have a garden? What are your favorite summer foods? What has been the best moment of your summer so far?
Well, here it finally is. I have been promising this post literally since I first started blogging and just haven’t gotten around to it before now. I am quite excited to introduce you to some of our animals!
This lovely lady is the daughter of one of our favorite cows, she had a beautiful heifer this year named Monarch.
Buttercream is currently one of our wonderful nurse cows.
This big guy was my brother’s baby when he was little, for now he is hanging out with our dry cows and heifers.
Hope’s mom was one of our original family cows and my mom’s most special cow. As Hope as gotten older she has grown in her resemblance to her beautiful mama, Grace.
This adorable little guy and his sisters (who will be include in Part 2 of this post) have been the source of much joy for my siblings and I over the past few months. He is so adventurous and active.
Ali is our amazing live-stock guard dog whose primary job is protecting our broilers. She lives out in the field right across the street from our house and we all see her often. obviously these pictures are a few months old, but she is still the same beautiful and obedient dog.
Aren’t they beautiful (and adorable)?! I might not be as crazy about animals as some members of my family are, but I love and appreciate all of our animals and enjoy helping to take care of them during the summer. After all they give us the amazing milk, eggs and meat that I so enjoy cooking with, so it’s hard not to love them. 😀
Do you have any animals? Are you a cat or dog person? ( I am definitely a dog person, with a few exceptions. ) What is your dream pet, fantasy or real?
I’ve taken a bunch of pictures this summer and I am (of course) excited to share them with you all as I tell you a bit about my summer. So let’s not bother with a meaningless intro.
I got to spend an amazing week at summer camp. I am so thankful for the wonderful memories I made and the time I got to spend there.
My grandparents visited, It was good to see them and the time flew by as it always does.
I have gotten to go (big) blueberry picking twice. Although I do not enjoy it as much as strawberry picking it is still something I love.
Reading everyday for several hours is my favorite part of summer. I have read more books than I can count, well not quite but close. One of my favorite places to read is in my wonderful Wise Owl hammock, that I got for Christmas last year.
As I have mentioned before I love fresh, local veggies, and being able to work with them has definitely been a highlight of my summer. I love making salads for my mom, using whatever fresh veggies we have around.
Life here on the farm has been as crazy and wonderful as it always is during the summer, non-stop work for my parents and lots of sunshine.
It is so hard for me to believe that the summer is already so close to being over. Summer always flies by, unlike winter, unfortunately.
I keep having to remind myself to enjoy August and not constantly be thinking about how sad I am that it is August.
I love fall and I love spring and sometimes I enjoy winter, but nothing ever compares to summer, ever. In some ways all fall and winter we live for spring and summer, especially if you are a farmer. We have to prepare for calving and then cheesemaking and then haying and markets and the list goes on and on.
It’s always hard to come to August and realize that summer is almost over, you look at your summer goals and are amazed by all that you haven’t accomplished and all you want to do before summer is over.
Honestly, I am nowhere near ready for the new school year to start and whatever challenges it will bring my way, so I am going to enjoy every last moment and hour day of my summer.
I challenge you to enjoy every last minute, day and hour of your summer (or at least as much of it as possible). 🙂
How has your summer been? What are some things you are hoping to accomplish this month? Do you have a favorite picture from this post?
I am back from my brief hiatus and I have several posts that I am excited about, but I had to write this one first.
So let’s jump right in!
I love strawberry picking. Absolutely love it. I think that my favorite part of summer is having fresh strawberries and sitting out in the hot sun for hours while picking them.
We have gone twice and we are thinking about going again. The first time we went the berries were huge ( my pictures don’t do them justice :)! We picked about eighty-five quarts, that day.
Strawberries are so beautiful! I love how the seeds are so defined in this picture. There is nothing like eating a strawberry right off the plant, when it still tastes like sunshine.
When I was younger, my dad worked at this farm, and we go back every year to pick strawberries. The farm is a very special place to us and it still feels like home in a way, even though it has been almost six years since we lived there.
We have been talking about making it a family tradition to always go strawberry picking together. It’s fun to imagine bringing my kids to this special farm and sharing the wonderful experience of stawberry picking with them.
The second time we went picking we picked 110 quarts! Our family record. 😀
I spent the entire next morning bagging these beautiful berries.
After my third (or was it fourth) flat I kind of thought I was going to go crazy or maybe already was crazy. When you look all around you and there are strawberries everywhere you just start to wonder.
My hands are still stained around my nails, but it was so worth it. Now we have bags and bags of strawberries to help get us through the winter and the satisfaction of knowing that we have more than last year so hopefully they will last at least as long.
Have you gone strawberry picking this year? What is one of your favorite summer activities?
It was really springy feeling for a couple of days here and now it’s gray and chilly out, ugh. I just want it to be sunny and warm! Haven’t we earned it after a long and cold winter!?
Anyway! Here are some pictures for you to (hopefully) enjoy looking through!
I am really proud of how this picture turned out. ❤️
Spiky green grass coming up through the rocks. Spring……………..😀
For some reason I haven’t taken nearly enough sky pictures recently. Not sure why?
Adorable little plants. 💕
Doesn’t it look like a little flower!?
Lilac buds! I LOVE lilacs!
Mini Life Update
We are in the process of having a farm store built (they just started today)! It is really exciting because we have been selling our milk, cheese and meat out of our garage since we moved here. I will have to take some pictures of the contrast. 😀
School is going well, I guess. I am so looking forward to finishing though (who isn’t)! Just a couple more months and it will be summer vacation!
We had piglets born a week or so ago and another calf born. We also got our broiler chicks! I really need to take pictures of them soon.
I have been reading a lot recently, probably more then I should be. I just read Michelle Obama’s Becoming and loved it! I have also found several new authors that I really enjoy and have been inspired to write some mini-reviews, so keep your eye out for more book related posts from me!
My new favorite food is baked potatoes with melted cheese, salt and butter. I could almost live on them. I wish that I had started eating them at the beginning of the winter and not at the end.
Well, that’s all I have to share today. I hope you enjoyed my short and random little life update. I am thinking about doing monthly review and update posts like so many other bloggers do.
Which picture was your favorite? Any thoughts on my doing monthly update and review posts? What is your favorite spring flower?
I am really happy to (finally) share the pictures I took a couple weeks ago of the snow. I thought about waiting another week since we are getting more snow, but I want to share them today. Just warning you, though, I will probably be posting more snow photos soon. 😀
I love how the snow on the green grass looks. In person the grass was even greener.
This picture makes me think of a brook. I love the contrast of the dark wet rocks to the fresh white snow.
More snowflakes, the reddish color of the stump is so beautiful.
More snowflakes and moss. ❤️
The orange fungus, white snow, dark bark combo is so pretty!
Snowflake and bark close up. I love this picture. I think this one is my favorite from this bunch of pictures.
One of our barn cats, Maya. She let me take quite a few pictures of her. This one turned out the best. 😀
Which picture is your favorite? Why??
Thanks for taking the time to scroll through all these photos! I am excited to hear what you thought of them in the comments!
So sorry that this post is a couple days late! I was having trouble with our computer.
I hope that the start of your new year has been amazing! Other then Christmas break ending my new year has been pretty great so far!
All week I have been getting emails with posts that titles are variations of my title for this post, so I thought that once again I might as well join them. I have never been successful at fulfilling any of my New Years resolutions in past years (I’m sure I am not the only one), but then again I’ve never really tried very hard. My hope is that if I try I will be able to complete most if not all of these resolutions!
Complete My Goodreads Reading Challenge
Last year I set the pretty unrealistic goal of reading 400 books. Unsurprising I ended up not being able to complete my challenge, falling 123 books short.
I am kind of proud of my self, that I read at least 277 books in 2018. That is pretty good right!? If only I hadn’t set my 2018 challenge as 400 books. *sighs*
Anyway, I am pretty confident that I can read 300 books this year! I’m excited to see what books I end up reading in 2019!
Write In My Journal Almost Daily
During the last six months or so of 2018 I hardly ever wrote in my journal. I really missed it but I just couldn’t (or didn’t make time for it).
A couple days ago I started a new journal for 2019. I am hoping to finish it this year, filling it only with writing, not turning it into a scrapbook like I did with 2018’s journal.
Be Able To Do A Split
This has been on every list of goals and resolutions I have made for the past couple years, but this is the first year that I am actually stretching every day. So hopefully 2019 will be the year I am finally able to say that I can do a split!
Become A Better Photographer
I intend to read a bunch of blog posts about photography, ask my friends and family for suggestions and tips and find some good photography books to read.
Even if none of this helps I will just keep learning by taking pictures. I think practice is one of the best ways to learn anyway. 😀
Stick To My Blogging Schedule
Right now I am posting on Monday or Tuesday and Friday. It’s working well for me and I plan to stick with it.
Become A Better Blogger
I am really excited to learn more about blogging and improve my blogging this year!!
Spend More Time Writing and Putting Together My Posts
I always feel like I just end of throwing my post together. My plan is to spend more time and thought on each post.
Reach 100 Followers
I love knowing other people are reading and enjoying (hopefully) my blog, I am looking forward to my audience growing!
